A frugal approach to structural innovation.

We are engineering a new hybrid structural system that consists of two external layers of wooden gridshells, tied to an internal layer of compressed straw bales and braced by an earthen mortar.

A gridshell is a lightweight, discontinuous shell structure made up of a net of fine one-dimensional elements, whose shape and structural behaviour are that of a shell. The advantage of this type of structures lies in the capability to achieve large spans with high structural efficiency with optimization of material quantities and simple assembly methods that result in short construction duration. They allow the creation of beautiful sculptural forms, blurring the boundary between artand architecture.

We employ timber gridshells, straw bales and plaster to form structural insulated panels (SIP) that allows the construction of structurally efficient, thermally insulated, locally sourced, low carbon,free-form enclosures of significant height and spans.
