The new terminal occupies a gigantic 30-acre site, so the primary design intention was to develop for the user a fluid, calm and luminous passage through the terminal. HDA contributed a delicate skeleton of skylight structures whose flowing geometry, an expression of the wings of the mythical bird, visually guides the passenger flows. The funicular gridshell structures, carefully optimised by weight and volume, are visible through the light-filtering ceiling canopy.
HDA also developed the airside façade, a 400m-long prestressed cable wall. This minimal structure was designed to give passengers clear panorama views of the aircraft, the runways and the surrounding landscape. The glass skin is provided with high-performance coating to reduce heat gain and maximise energy conservation.
